About us

ETH Zurich (Eidgenoessische Technische Hochschule Zurich, ETHZ) is the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich. Founded in 1854 as a federal institute (i.e., under direct administration by the Swiss government), ETH is a technical university with a strong emphasis on both theory and applications, and is one of Europe's premier universities in many fields.
ETH is a first-class research and teaching institution comprising more than 12000 students and 8000 staff, and granting more than 450 doctorates a year. The quality of theoretical research at ETH requires little argument, with a 150-year tradition involving such names as Clausius, Einstein, Weyl, Pauli, Debye, Bernays and many others, with three Nobel prizes since 1975, a top score among European universities. ETH is also the forefront of European universities in its international character as more than 50% of the ETH faculty and PhD students are from abroad. By cultivating alliances with top partners worldwide and continuing to seek new partnerships for mutual benefit in Europe as well as North America and the Asia-Pacific area, ETH is a world-class institute of technology.

The Chair of Software Engineering is devoted to the development of methods and tools for improving software quality. Although we attempt to cover the whole field of software engineering, our areas of emphasis are:

As part of our activities we publish the JOT, the Journal of Object Technology - the principal international journal on everything object-oriented - and organize events such as the annual Laser summer school, TOOLS-EUROPE, SEAFOOD, TAP and regular software engineering seminars.
